The South African Deputy High Commissioner, Bongiwe Qwabe, unveiled a plaque commemorating Nelson Mandela's honorary membership of UNISON at the union’s London headquarters on Thursday 3 July 2014.
UNISON’s former President, Baroness Rita Donaghy, recalled her visit to South Africa at the time of its first democratic election in 1994 and the close relations between UNISON and South Africa’s public sector unions. Other speakers were UNISON General Secretary, Dave Prentis, and ACTSA’s Tony Dykes. The ‘Forward to Freedom’ exhibition went on show in UNISON’s atrium exhibition space.
